city of regional significance of Ukraine

Znamianka is a city of regional significance located in central Ukraine, within Kropyvnytskyi Raion of Kirovohrad Oblast. As of 2022, the city had an estimated population of 21,221 and serves as an important railway junction.

Geographical Location

Znamianka is situated approximately equidistant from the regional center Kropyvnytskyi to the west and the cities of Oleksandriia to the east and Svitlovodsk to the north. It is recognized as a significant railway hub on the routes connecting Kyiv-Dnipro and Kharkiv-Odesa.

Historical Background

The area of modern Kirovohrad Oblast, including Znamianka, was originally inhabited by the Scythians, with archaeological findings such as a bronze and golden Scythian eagle image symbolizing the region. During the Middle Ages, it was home to the East Slavic tribe of Ulichis.

Following the liberation of Kyivan Rus' from Tatar control, the establishment of the first Zaporozhian Sich by Dmytro Vyshnevetsky aimed to protect against incursions from the Crimean Khanate and Muscovy. Several villages were founded by Zaporozhians near present-day Znamianka.

Znamianka was officially founded in 1869 with the commencement of train services between Kharkiv and Odesa. The settlement grew around a railway station named after a nearby village, Znamianka Druha.

20th Century Developments

By 1913, the population of the settlements around Znamianka reached approximately 6,000. The train station evolved from a third-category station with limited facilities to a significant rail hub, shipping out substantial quantities of goods.

During the Ukrainian War of Independence and subsequent conflicts, Znamianka was part of various Ukrainian states and witnessed significant military activity. It became a district center in 1923 and was designated an urban-type settlement in 1930, later achieving city status in 1938.

The city suffered during the Holodomor, with at least 891 residents perishing due to famine and repression. World War II brought further hardship, including German occupation and civilian casualties.

Recent History

In 2012, the city council declared Russian as the regional language, a decision later deemed unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in 2018. The population in January 2013 was recorded at 23,983.

Znamianka played a role during the Anti-Terrorist Operation and the Operation of the United Forces, with many citizens participating in combat and some losing their lives.

Administrative reforms in 2020 led to the merging of Znamianka Municipality into Kropyvnytskyi Raion. During the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city has served as a refuge for thousands of displaced individuals.

Geography and Climate

Znamianka is located in the southeastern part of the Dnieper Upland. The city features a popular reservoir, the Balka Orlova river, along with several ponds.
