History
Svitlovodsk was established in the 1950s during the Soviet era to replace Novogeorgievsk, a city located in the floodplain of the dam for the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Power Plant, intended to accommodate the dam workers. Initially named Khruschev for two years, the city was later renamed KremHES after a visit from Nikita Khrushchev in 1962. The hydroelectric power plant was crucial for the production of industry-grade metals and alloys for defense purposes and remained a secret facility for several years, now operating as a private enterprise.
Upon the completion of the dam, Khrushchev participated in the opening ceremonies, and the city expanded westward along the riverbank. Svitlovodsk is culturally divided into Old Svitlovodsk and New Svitlovodsk.
