Historical Significance
The city was first documented in 1184 as part of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia. The name Rohatyn is thought to derive from Ruthenia, with its emblem featuring a deer horn, symbolizing the Slavic roots of the name. The town gained Magdeburg rights in 1415 under Polish rule, becoming a significant trading and manufacturing hub.
Rohatyn was annexed by Austria after the First Partition of Poland in 1772 and became a county center. A Ukrainian gymnasium was established in 1909, and the city was granted status as a city in 1939 when it became part of Soviet Ukraine.
Jewish Community and the Holocaust
The Jewish community in Rohatyn likely began in the 15th and 16th centuries, with formal rights granted by King Władysław IV Vasa in 1633. The community was part of the Council of Communities for the Lviv district and experienced significant cultural and educational development.
Before World War II, approximately 3,000 Jews lived in Rohatyn, making up about half of the population. The community suffered greatly during the Holocaust, with mass murders occurring in 1942 and the ghetto being liquidated by the Germans in 1943. The city was liberated by the Red Army on July 24, 1944, with only around 30 Jews surviving from the ghetto.
