Geographical and Administrative Details
Zolote, known in Ukrainian as Золоте and in Russian as Золотое, is situated in the Sievierodonetsk Raion of Luhansk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. The city was created through the amalgamation of several villages, which are now designated sequentially from Zolote 1 to Zolote 5. The original names of these villages included Karbonit, Rodina, Stakhanovets, Maryvka, and Partyzansky.
Impact of the Conflict in Donbas
The city of Zolote has been significantly impacted by the war in Donbas, with parts of it coming under the control of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). Zolote-5, formerly known as Maryvka, fell completely under LPR control, while Zolote-4 (Patrizansky) and Zolote-3 (Stakhanovets) became part of the 'gray zone' amid ongoing hostilities.
On 30 June 2018, the Ukrainian army regained full control of Zolote-4, although some Ukrainian activists alleged that the takeover was staged, claiming that Ukrainian soldiers had been present in the area since 2014.
Administrative Changes
On 7 October 2014, to improve governance in Luhansk Oblast, the Verkhovna Rada restructured the administrative divisions, resulting in Zolote being transferred from Pervomaisk Municipality to Popasna Raion.
Recent Developments
On 23 June 2022, Zolote came under the de facto control of the Luhansk People's Republic. Reports indicated that approximately 2,000 Ukrainian troops were encircled in the town prior to its capture during the ongoing battle in the Donbas region.
