The first recorded mention of the village dates back to 1358, under the name Buchku, which is derived from a Slavic term meaning 'bull'. Initially owned by the Bosckai family until 1556, it subsequently came under the ownership of the Báthory family. By 1711, a mansion was established in the area. Following the unsuccessful revolution led by Francis II Rákóczi, German settlers arrived.
Historically, the village comprised three sections: Nagybocskó and Kisbocskó (now Velykyy Bychkiv) and Németbocskó (now Bocicoiu Mare in Romania). At that time, it was part of the Hungarian county of Máramaros.
After World War I, Velykyi Bychkiv became part of Czechoslovakia, where it played a significant role in the Ukrainian national movement. In 1939, it reverted to Hungarian control before being transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1945. On 26 January 2024, a new law reclassified Velykyi Bychkiv from an urban-type settlement to a rural settlement.
