political party
Also known as: UNA–UNSO, Українська Національна Асамблея — Українська Народна Самооборона
The Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People's Self-Defence (UNA-UNSO) is a Ukrainian nationalist organization comprising a political wing and a paramilitary wing. Established in 1991, it has played a significant role in far-right politics in Ukraine and has participated in various international conflicts.
Formation and Early Years
The Ukrainian National Assembly was founded on 30 June 1990 in Lviv as the Ukrainian Interparty Assembly. Following a congress in Kyiv in November 1990, the organization evolved, and by 19 August 1991, it had formed squads of the Ukrainian People's Self-Defense in response to the Soviet coup attempt. The organization was officially renamed the Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian National Self-Defence after Ukraine's Declaration of Independence on 8 September 1991.
Political Activities and Influence
The UNA-UNSO was registered as a political party in December 1994, and during the 1994 parliamentary elections, three of its members were elected to the Verkhovna Rada. The organization gained notoriety for its anti-Russian activities, including the destruction of a Russian flag in parliament and participation in the First Chechen War alongside Chechen rebels. By the late 1990s, membership peaked at around 10,000, primarily among younger individuals.
International Conflicts
UNA-UNSO members have participated in several international conflicts, including the Transnistria War, the War in Abkhazia, and the Russo-Ukrainian War. During the Transnistria War, they fought alongside separatists, while in Abkhazia, they supported Georgian forces against Russian-backed separatists. In the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, UNSO has been involved as part of various volunteer battalions.
Leadership and Structure
The leadership of the UNA-UNSO has changed over the years, with notable leaders including Yuriy Shukhevych and Andriy Shkil. Following a ban imposed by the government in 1997, members responded with protests, and the organization has since undergone various transformations, including a merger with Right Sector in May 2014.
Ideology and Image
The UNA-UNSO's ideology has been characterized as nationalist, envisioning Kyiv as the center of a pan-Slavic military bloc. Despite being described as a fringe movement, its visibility has had a notable impact on far-right politics in Ukraine. The organization's anthem is a rendition of 'Bella ciao'.
