Historical Background
The first recorded mention of Truskavets dates back to 1469 when it was known as Truskawiec. The local waters were first described by Wojciech Oczko, a Polish royal doctor, in 1578. The village was part of the Polish Crown until the First Partition of Poland in 1772, after which it became part of Austria. The first baths in Truskavets opened in 1827, and by the mid-19th century, the area had developed into a spa destination.
After World War I, Truskawiec regained popularity as a spa town, and by the 1920s and 1930s, it had become a leading resort in Poland, hosting notable figures from various fields. However, the spa's operation was disrupted during World War II, leading to significant changes in ownership and management.
Following the war, Truskavets was annexed by the Soviet Union, resulting in the destruction of many historic structures. The town was incorporated as a city of oblast significance until July 18, 2020, when it became part of Drohobych Raion as part of administrative reforms in Ukraine.
Cultural Significance and Notable Residents
Truskavets has been associated with various notable individuals, including Taras Bobanych (1989–2022), a Ukrainian lawyer and soldier. The town is also recognized for its cultural connections, being twinned with several towns in Poland and Slovakia, including Działdowo and Limanowa.
Modern Developments
In 2000, a special economic zone named 'Kurortopolis Truskavets' was established to promote investment in health and medical treatment, resulting in the approval of 13 investment projects. The modern coat of arms of Truskavets features a goose, symbolizing vigilance, kindness, and health.
