On 18 July 2020, a significant administrative reform in Ukraine reduced the number of raions in Rivne Oblast to four, leading to a substantial expansion of Rivne Raion. The population estimate for the raion in January 2020 was 92,981.

Rivne Raion comprises 439 settlements, including six cities. It encompasses 26 territorial communities, which include urban communities such as Rivne, Ostroh, Berezne, Zdolbuniv, Korets, and Kostopil, as well as various rural communities like Sosnove, Hoshcha, Mizoch, and others.

The area of Rivne Raion covers 3,294.1 km² and shares borders with the Sarny, Varash, and Dubno districts of Rivne Oblast, as well as the Khmelnytskyi, Zhytomyr, Ternopil, and Volyn regions of Ukraine. The district's terrain is predominantly flat and lowland, characterized by pine and oak forests.

The district is situated mainly in the Volhynian Upland, with the Mizotsky ridge reaching a height of 342 m, which is the highest point in the Volyn Upland. The Pripyat River basin encompasses the raion, with the Horyn River flowing through it. The climate is moderately continental, featuring mild winters and warm summers, with an average annual precipitation of 550 mm.

Derman-Ostroh National Nature Park is located within Rivne Raion, contributing to the region's ecological significance.

Rivne Raion is served by major highways, including the European route E40 and the national highway H22, facilitating access to Kyiv, Lviv, and Poland. Zdolbuniv, a city in the raion, serves as a crucial railway junction in Western Ukraine, with rail connections to Kovel, Lviv, and Kyiv. The Gdansk-Odesa Organisation for Co-operation between Railways corridor also traverses Zdolbuniv.
