Orange Revolution
revolution
The Orange Revolution was a series of protests in Ukraine from late November 2004 to January 2005, initiated by widespread public discontent over perceived electoral fraud in the presidential election. The movement ultimately led to the annulment of the election results and a re-vote, resulting in Viktor Yushchenko's presidency.
Background
The assassination of journalist Georgiy Gongadze in 2000, linked to President Leonid Kuchma, catalyzed public dissent against the government. This unrest set the stage for the political changes that would culminate in the Orange Revolution.
Causes of the Orange Revolution
The 2004 presidential election occurred during a period of public impatience for economic and political reform in Ukraine. Many citizens believed the election results were fraudulent, prompting widespread protests, particularly among western and central Ukrainians.
Political Climate and Candidates
The election featured Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, supported by outgoing President Kuchma, and opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The election was marred by intimidation and alleged poisoning of Yushchenko, which affected his campaign.
Protests and Civil Disobedience
Protests began following the controversial runoff election on 21 November 2004, with significant gatherings in Kyiv's Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The movement was characterized by peaceful demonstrations, civil disobedience, and a strong symbolic use of the color orange, representing Yushchenko's campaign.
Outcomes and Aftermath
The protests led to the annulment of the original election results and a re-vote on 26 December 2004, which was deemed free and fair. Yushchenko won the election with approximately 52% of the vote and was inaugurated on 23 January 2005, marking the end of the Orange Revolution.
