Historical Significance
Olesko has historical importance as it was the residence of the rebbes of Alesk and the birthplace of Jan III Sobieski, who served as the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
The earliest documented Jewish community in Olesko dates back to 1500. By 1935, the Jewish population had reached 738, and the settlement was known for being home to tzadikim during the 19th century.
Administrative Changes
On 18 July 2020, Olesko transitioned from Busk Raion, which was dissolved as part of an administrative reform in Ukraine that reduced the number of raions in Lviv Oblast to seven. The territory of Busk Raion was incorporated into Zolochiv Raion.
Additionally, on 26 January 2024, Olesko's status changed from an urban-type settlement to a rural settlement due to new legislation.
