Mykolaiv Raion
raion of Ukraine
Mykolaiv Raion is a district located in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine, with a pre-war population estimated at 636,832 in 2022. The administrative center of the raion is the city of Mykolaiv.
Historical Background
In the 19th century, the region was part of the Kherson Governorate. Following the Russian Revolution, it experienced several administrative changes. In December 1920, it was renamed Nikolayev Governorate, and in 1921, it was incorporated into Odesa Governorate.
The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic abolished governorates in 1923, leading to the formation of Mykolaiv Raion within Mykolaiv Okruha, with Mykolaiv serving as its administrative center. The abolition of governorates in 1925 resulted in okruhas being directly governed by the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1930, the okruhas were dissolved, and Mykolaiv Raion was transferred to Varvarivka Raion. On 27 February 1932, the area became part of the newly established Odesa Oblast. Subsequently, on 22 September 1937, Mykolaiv Oblast was formed from territories previously belonging to Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa Oblasts, with Varvarivka Raion included in the new Mykolaiv Oblast.
On 8 August 1945, Shyrokolanivka Raion was created from parts of Varvarivka and Tylihulo-Berezanka Raions, leading to a division of the area between Varvarivka and Shyrokyi Lan Raions. Shyrokyi Lan Raion was dissolved on 7 June 1957, and its territory was divided between Varvarivka and Veselynove Raions. In January 1963, Varvarivka Raion was abolished, resulting in the re-establishment of Mykolaiv Raion.
Administrative Reform
On 18 July 2020, as part of Ukraine's administrative reform, the number of raions in Mykolaiv Oblast was reduced to four, significantly expanding the area of Mykolaiv Raion. This reform merged four previously abolished raions—Berezanka, Nova Odesa, Ochakiv, and Vitovka—along with the cities of Mykolaiv and Ochakiv, which were previously designated as cities of oblast significance and not part of any raion.
