Geographical and Administrative Context
Makariv is situated in Bucha Raion within the Kyiv Oblast of Ukraine. It functions as the administrative center for the Makariv settlement hromada, which is one of the hromadas in Ukraine.
Historical Background
The documented history of Makariv dates back to its connection with the village of Voronin, part of the Yasinets estates owned by the Lithuanian feudal lords Ivashentsevichs, first mentioned in 1506. The settlement was named after Makar Vasentsevich, who settled there and changed the village's name to Makariv.
From the 16th to the 18th century, a castle existed in Makariv, which housed a small garrison during the final years of Polish rule. The estate was destroyed during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, with local residents actively participating in the Ukrainian national liberation movement.
Makariv's governance changed multiple times during the Ukrainian Revolution (1917–1921) until it was occupied by Soviet Russia in 1920 and annexed by the USSR in 1921. The village underwent collectivization in the 1920s and suffered greatly during the Holodomor, leading to approximately 3,450 deaths from hunger.
During World War II, Makariv was under German administration from July 10, 1941, to November 8, 1943, and its Jewish population faced genocide. The area also served as a base for partisan units.
Post-Independence Developments
Since Ukraine's independence in 1991, Makariv has experienced significant economic changes, primarily focusing on agricultural production and processing. Until July 18, 2020, it served as the administrative center of Makariv Raion, which was dissolved as part of an administrative reform that reduced the number of raions in Kyiv Oblast.
Impact of the 2022 Russian Invasion
During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Makariv was the site of military confrontations. On February 28, Ukrainian forces attacked a Russian military convoy in the settlement. Civilians were casualties of the conflict, with two deaths reported on the same day.
By March 2, Ukrainian military forces had retaken Makariv, although the area experienced heavy fighting and airstrikes in the following days, resulting in civilian casualties and significant damage to infrastructure.
On March 22, 2022, it was confirmed that Makariv had been recaptured, with the Ukrainian flag raised over the town.
