History

The Lviv Philharmonic commenced its activities in 1902 at the site of the former Scarbeck Theater, now known as the Maria Zankovetska National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater. In 1933, Adam Soltys established the Academic Symphony Orchestra associated with the Lviv Philharmonic. The Philharmonic is home to various ensembles, including the Academic Symphony Orchestra, the Lviv Virtuosos Academic Chamber Orchestra, the High Castle Academic Instrumental Ensemble, the bandura quartet 'Lvivianky', and the ensemble '19th Class'. Subsequently, on September 29, 2020, the Lviv Regional Council honored the institution by naming it after Myroslav Skoryk.

Building

The building of the Lviv Philharmonic was designed in 1905 by architect Władysław Halytskyi in the Neo-Baroque style, commissioned by the Halychyna Musical Society. It was intended to accommodate a conservatory and a concert hall, with part of the structure designated as a revenue-generating house. Construction was briefly halted and resumed in the Vienna Secession style under architect Władysław Sadłowski in 1906.

The sculptural decorations of the building's facades, featuring reliefs of musical instruments and two metal swan sculptures in the attic, were created by sculptor Piotr Witalis Harasimowicz. The interior of the two-tiered concert hall was adorned with busts of composers by sculptor Luna Drexlerówna. The building's design was showcased in a 1910 exhibition of Polish architects in Lviv. Following World War II, the building served as the concert hall for the Lysenko Conservatory and has been the home of the Lviv Regional Philharmonic since the 1940s. It is listed in the Register of Architectural Monuments of Local Significance with protection number 374-m.
