Donetsk National Technical University

university

Also known as: DNTU, DonNTU, Donetsk Polytechnic Institute

Donetsk National Technical University (DonNTU) is the largest and oldest higher education institution in the Donbas region of Ukraine, established in 1921. Due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, the university operates in a split format, with a Ukrainian-controlled campus in Drohobych and a Russian-controlled campus in Donetsk.

History

Founded in 1921, Donetsk National Technical University was the first higher education institution in the Donbas region. Notably, Nikita Khrushchev attended the university during its early years.

In 1941, the university temporarily relocated to Prokopyevsk, RSFSR (modern-day Russia). Following the loss of Ukrainian government control over Donetsk in 2014 amid the war in Donbas, the university was divided into two branches: one remaining in Donetsk and the other moving to Pokrovsk.

As of 2022, the Donetsk National Technical University has been accredited in Russia, with graduates receiving diplomas recognized by Russian authorities. In December 2023, the Russian branch won a gold medal at a competitive programming championship.

On 28 February 2024, a Russian missile attack partially destroyed the temporary building of the Ukrainian campus in Pokrovsk, prompting the relocation of its activities first to Lutsk and subsequently to Drohobych in Lviv Oblast.

A Polish faculty has been established, and thirty professors from foreign institutions hold the title of Honorary Doctors of DonNTU. The university also has a reading room sponsored by the Goethe Institute from Germany.
