Chyhyryn Raion was a district in Cherkasy Oblast, central Ukraine, known for its historical significance during the Ukrainian War of Independence. It was dissolved in 2020 as part of administrative reforms in Ukraine.

Geographical and Administrative Overview

Chyhyryn Raion (Ukrainian: Чигиринський район) was a district located in Cherkasy Oblast, in the central part of Ukraine. The administrative center of the raion was situated in the town of Chyhyryn.

Dissolution and Population

On 18 July 2020, Chyhyryn Raion was abolished as part of an administrative reform in Ukraine, which aimed to reduce the number of raions in Cherkasy Oblast to four. Following its dissolution, the territory of Chyhyryn Raion was incorporated into Cherkasy Raion. At the time of its disestablishment, the estimated population of the raion was 25,410.

Hromadas

At the time of its dissolution, Chyhyryn Raion was composed of two hromadas: the Chyhyryn urban hromada, which had its administration in Chyhyryn, and the Medvedivka rural hromada, with its administration located in the selo of Medvedivka.

Historical Significance

The region that encompassed Chyhyryn Raion played a notable role during the Ukrainian War of Independence, being the site of the Kholodny Yar Republic. This republic, led by local leader Vasyl Chuchupak, existed from 1919 to 1922 and aimed for Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union.
